Water inside the cabinet beneath a kitchen sink can come from several sources. The timing of the leak can provide an important clue.
A constant drip may involve a pressurized water supply connection. Water that appears only while the sink is draining may point to the drainpipe or one of its fittings.
Check the Water Supply Connections
The hot and cold supply lines connect the faucet to the home’s plumbing system. Loose fittings, worn valves, or damaged supply lines can allow water to drip even when the sink is not being used.
Do not continue tightening a fitting if you are unsure which part is leaking. Excessive force can damage the connection and make the leak worse.
The Drain May Be Leaking
Drain fittings can loosen, shift, or deteriorate over time. Water may escape from the strainer, trap, or another connection when the sink is filled or drained.
A drain leak may remain hidden until a large amount of water moves through the pipe. Continuing to use the sink can damage the cabinet and surrounding materials.
The Water May Be Coming From Above
Water around the faucet base or countertop can travel through an opening and collect underneath the sink. A leaking spray hose or fixture connection can create a similar problem.
Dry the area and observe when moisture returns. Avoid using nearby electrical outlets or appliances if water has reached them.
