Why Is My Toilet Leaking at the Base?
Water collecting around the bottom of a toilet may come from the connection beneath the fixture, the water supply line, condensation, or another nearby source.
Pay attention to when the water appears. A leak that occurs after flushing may involve the seal between the toilet and the drain opening.
The Toilet Seal May Have Failed
A wax ring or other toilet seal creates a watertight and airtight connection between the toilet and the floor flange. When that seal fails, water may escape around the base during a flush.Other warning signs can include sewer odors or a toilet that rocks when someone sits on it.
A Loose Toilet Can Damage the Seal
A toilet should sit firmly against the floor. Movement can weaken the seal and may indicate loose hardware, an uneven floor, or a damaged flange.
Simply tightening the bolts may not correct the underlying problem. Overtightening can also damage the toilet or mounting components.
The Water May Be Coming From Somewhere Else
A leaking supply line, shutoff valve, or tank connection can allow water to run down the toilet and collect near the floor. Condensation on the outside of the tank can create a similar appearance. Drying the area and observing when the water returns can help a plumber locate the source.
